Job Summary: As the Urban Development Project Specialist, you will support the implementation of the Cities4Forests initiatives across Africa's cities through project coordination, research, and facilitating stakeholders engagement. In this position, you will support in developing agreements & securing political commitments; organizing activities such as conferences and workshops; scoping technical assistance, and researching best practices.

You will support the technical lead in developing and implementing the stakeholder engagement and partnership in Urban Development, Cities4Forests, and nature-based solutions projects. You will also, conduct research on sustainable and innovative urban development solutions, green infrastructure issues; and related urban development projects of WRI Africa.

This position is a full-time, one-year position with the possibility of extension and will be based in one of our offices in WRI Africa.

Job Responsibilities:

Project Management (50% of time required)

  •  Support the technical lead in developing a detailed project work plan for each program including key milestones and deliverables at each stage of the project
  •  Support coordination of urban development projects to ensure consistency and high-quality deliverables. This includes coordination with a diverse team of researchers, decision-makers, and practitioners to implement projects and advance research within the cities program.
  •  Collaborate with city governments', local partners and WRI staff globally to advance the WRI Africa Cities Program
  •  Based on the implementation of the ongoing projects, support the development of concept notes or project proposals that are related with cities4forests initiative and other related projects of WRI
  •  Manage day-to-day research and project implementation including the preparation of work plans, follow up on project implementation and prepare of progress reports among others.

Research & Knowledge (30% of time required)

  •  Support WRI Africa in the implementation of urban development activities including Cities4Forests, urban resilience, nature-based solutions, and other
  •  Identify tools and applications that would be useful for urban planning and development of innovative blue and green infrastructure solutions and find potential links with local universities or other organizations
  •  Carry out background research on a variety of topics surrounding green, blue, and grey infrastructure, nature-based solution, and urban development,
  •  Support in developing written material including city reports, policy briefs as well as brochures, newsletters, handouts, power points, talking points, and background documents
  •  Under the leadership of the project lead help scope technical assistance services from partners/experts to support city and regional governments in advancing action on priority green infrastructure, urban resilience, urban development, and other WRI Africa cities areas of Engagement

Communications (20% of time required)

  •  Provide and develop content for WRI communications activities, including blogs, newsletters and the WRI Africa website
  •  Support development of reports to city governments, funders and others on WRI activities c4bMWHb vb91c
  •  Prepare presentations and written and graphic content for presentations and reports

Job Qualifications:

  •  Minimum of 3 years of full-time work experience in the field of urban development or planning, green infrastructure implementation or planning either in project implementation or research capacity
  •  Sound understanding of urban development including green, gray and blue infrastructure development, etc., and knowledge on how urban resilience relates to the environment, health, and quality of life
  •  Demonstrable previous experience in supporting original projects, programs and city planning activities
  •  Demonstrated ability to connect research results to measurable external change
  •  Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in key issues in sustainable cities, climate resilience, and/or water-wise development, nature-based solutions.
  •  Strong written and verbal communication skills
  •  Knowledge of integrated regional development planning is a plus
  •  Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as part of a team, including actively contributing to team discussions
  •  Willingness to work effectively under pressure and take on new challenges as required
  •  Extremely well organized, a detail-oriented, independent thinker, effective at organizing tasks and coordinating with partners to achieve project milestones and deliverables
  •  Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with teams of individuals and colleagues
  •  Full fluency in English required and second language/ Amharic is (preferred)
  •  Degree in urban/regional planning, environmental science, development studies or related, Master's degree is a plus
  •  Must be a citizen or have existing work authorization for the applicable country office

WRI Africa is seeking an urban development expert to provide coordination support, research and stakeholder engagement to the WRI Africa cities programs, particularly Cities4Forests and other initiatives including nature-based solutions, urban resilience, urban development and planning. Cities4Forests is a global network of more than 75 leading cities around the world that aims to raise awareness and catalyze action on the part of city residents and city governments respectively, about the importance of forests for cities and their residents. WRI Africa is engaging with fifteen cities (a mix of Cities4Forests member and allied cities) in Africa on this agenda. Cities4Forests supports the cities to better conserve, manage and restore trees and forests and tap the substantial benefits that nature-based solutions at large can provide for water supply, climate resilience, human livelihoods and well-being and more. We help to build political will for forest restoration and conservation at the subnational level, provide technical assistance to drive city-led projects - both inside and outside city boundaries - forward and scale them across the continent, and conduct economic assessments that facilitate access to finance.
