Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.
Description of task

Under the direct supervision of Head of Programmes, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Work with a team of national staff who design and produce daily radio programs for broadcasting on Radio Miraya, in view of (a) providing objective and correct information as a general news service regarding the role of the UN to the general public and the political and socio-economic situation in South Sudan; (b) providing a platform for intra-community debate on the peace and future of South Sudan through participatory formats; and (c) work with the team of journalists to support the design and development of radio news, programmes and other content to address issues including protection of civilians, human rights, humanitarian assistance, youth, gender, education, health etc.;
  • Train, mentor, and build capacity of local journalists in radio broadcasting and the production of trails, Public Service Announcements, radio drama and other creative formats;
  • Support the integration of new media (website, Social Media and other tools) into radio production;
  • Check all information used for its accuracy and reliability, in addition, checking sources of information and reference; ensuring that all broadcast content produced complies with the highest possible standards of integrity, neutrality, objectivity, and clarity;
  • Liaise with all relevant UNMISS Sections, UN Agencies, governmental bodies, civil society organizations etc., to identify priority themes for broadcasting on Radio Miraya and to identify specific target groups for such broadcasts, liaising with local media, local government bodies, academic and research institutions, local civil society, etc. to keep track of national, regional and global media developments and trends or other relevant fields;
  • Under the direct supervision of the Head of Programmes; plan, support the organization and coordination of the operational activities of the radio unit in relation to the overall objective of the radio strategy;
  • Perform other ad hoc duties related to the operations of the Radio.
Required degree level
Bachelor degree or equivalent

  • Advanced degree in journalism, media, mass communications, or similar subject area.

  • At least three (3) years of recent demonstrated experience in progressively responsible work experience in media or practicing radio jurnalist at the national and/or international level;
  • Experience in train, mentor, and build capacity of local journalists in radio broadcasting and the production of trails, Public Service Announcements, radio drama and other creative formats;

Area of expertise details
  • Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word etc.) and other IT applications and office technology equipment;
  • Previous experience with a UN Mission or Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) setting at the national or international level, with national civilian/military entities, or with other organizations with comparable mandates and working conditions is an asset;
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills, with written and spoken English and Arabic;
  • Knowledge of digital recording equipment and digital audio editing software, e.g. Cool Edit;
  • Knowledge of new media and its potential integration with traditional forms of broadcasting;
  • Have affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System;
  • Have a valid driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 vehicles;
  • Sound security awareness.
