MENTAL HEALTH NURSE (Cameroonian National Only) at International Medical Corps

Provision of clinical nursing services for people with severe mental disorders:

  1. Assessing and planning nursing care requirements

  2. Building relationships with, reassuring, and listening to and talking to patients

  3. Consulting patients for mental illnesses, and administering medication.

  4. Issues medication prescriptions in accordance with treatment guidelines.

  5. Orders laboratory tests, interprets and explains the test results to patients.

  6. Educates patients regarding medications, risks, benefits and reasonable outcome expectations.

  7. Provides psychiatric health services, education, counseling and emotional support.

  8. Combating stigma and helping patients and their families manage it

  9. Maintains appropriate, supportive and respectful relationships with carers and family members.

  10. Establishes a therapeutic relationship with patients that respects the patient’s choices, experiences and circumstances.

  11. Builds on strengths, holding hope and enhancing resilience to promote recovery.

  12. Liaises closely with family and carers of patients as appropriate and needed.

  13. Regularly reviews the patient’s mental state and administers prescribed medication and monitors side effects.

  14. Provides evidence-based psycho-education and psychotherapeutic interventions, as appropriate.

  15. Plans and provides support and medical and nursing care to people who have a range of mental health issues.

  16. Encourages patients to take part in therapeutic activities such as art and role play.

  17. Visiting patients at home.

  18. Be responsible for the safe storage and administration of clinical equipment.

Coordination of clinical services for people with severe mental disorders

  1. Coordinates services for people affected by mental health issues by arranging access to interventions from other health professionals and service providers around.

  2. Refers patients for inpatient care as need arises.

  3. Contributes to the planning and care management of an individual.

  4. Communicates with clinical psychologist, general practitioners, and significant others on progress of care provision to a patient.

  5. Liaises/collaborates with doctors, social workers, clinical psychologist, nursing staff, counselors, technical personnel and other professionals.

  6. Gives advice and arranges support for patients, relatives and carers.

Mental Health Treatment Plan Development and Data Management

  1. Organizes workloads, draws up work plans and provides weekly and monthly reports of activities.

  2. Agrees and reviews care plans with patients and monitors progress.

  3. Writes and updates patient records

  4. Develops and regularly reviews Mental Health Treatment Plans in collaboration with the person experiencing the mental health issue, clinical psychologist, family, carers, general practitioners, and any other significant others involved.

  5. Maintains current and accurate records of assessment, treatment, progress and discharge which reflect a person’s needs.

  6. Uses appropriate measurement tools to measure and monitor symptoms and provides feedback to the individual and other relevant health care providers (such as the Health of the Nation Outcomes Scale (HoNOS), HoNOS Child & Adolescent (HoNOSCA), Strengths & Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and/or Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS21)

General

  1. Participates in all MHPSS team meetings, collaborative planning activities and quality assurance activities organized by IMC.

  2. Knowledge and compliance with ISML policies and procedures.

  3. Carries out Work Health and Safety responsibilities as identified in ISML policies and procedures.

  4. Discharges equity and diversity responsibilities as identified in ISML policies and procedures.

  5. Demonstrate awareness of safeguarding principles in all dealings with individuals and their families.

Professional

  1. Ensures that confidentiality is maintained at all times in accordance with the Data.

  2. Observes the Protection Act, the Children Act, safeguarding legislation, the NMC and Breathe Therapies Policy.

  3. Operates at own level of professional competency.

  4. Maintains professional boundaries.

  5. Operates within IMC guidelines and rules.

  6. Maintains and monitors professional nursing conduct ensuring that appropriate standards are met.

  7. Ensure that senior nursing staff are informed of all professional and clinical issues.

  8. Participates in regular clinical supervision, ensuring evidence-based practice.

  9. Maintains confidentiality especially in reference to patient records.

  10. Be professional at all times.

  11. Performs other duties as situations demand.

Required qualification:

  • Hold a state Nursing mental health diploma

  • Have at least two years practicing experience as a psychiatric nurse

  • Have at least two years experience working with NGOs

  • Be of Cameroonian Nationality

  • Have a valid National Identity Card
