Mission of the Department:  

 

To strengthen effective management oversight of WWF International Managed Country Offices in the Congo Basin region in delivering the WWF Mission and driving conservation impact in the region, by ensuring operational excellence, programme quality, risk management and assurance.

 

Major Functions:

 

  • Provides inspirational, supportive leadership and line management to Congo Basin sub-regional team (to be defined) to enhance the delivery of the Congo Basin programmes and country strategies.
  • Leads the development, execution, and monitoring of the Congo Basin programme strategy aligned to the African Conservation Framework and contributing to the global goals.
  • Supports change management processes in the Congo Basin sub-region set up guided by the Regional Director and team.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

 

Strategy Development and Implementation

  • Lead the development and implementation of the Congo Basin sub-regional strategy in line with the Africa Strategic Conservation framework and the WWF Global Goals.
  • Monitors and supports the Congo Basin offices in the implementation of the strategy; Independent Panel Review action plans and reporting on progress, and resolution of challenges.
  • Oversees WWFs policy and advocacy efforts in the Congo Basin and contributes to global advocacy efforts impacting conservation in the region by ensuring the development of sound advocacy strategies and practice; and lobbying at highest level to advance WWFs conservation goals.
  • Leads and coordinates engagement with Network partners and Congo Basin Shareholder Group on enhancing the visibility of WWF in the Congo Basin, resource mobilization and in policy engagements with external strategic partners.
  • Accountability and oversight of Congo Basin offices compliance to Network Standards and Policies (ESSF, Social policies commitments, People and Culture policies, Country Agreements, etc. and embedding of Network Values at country and sub-regional level.
  • Chairing and coordination of the Congo Basin Support Group meetings and follow up on agreed actions.
  • Partners with and contributes to the regional management team decision-making processes to ensure the efficient management of WWF in the Congo Basin.
  • Ensures that country performance is monitored and reported against Strategic Plans; the ACF and WWF Global goals using the appropriate tools (SPMS, APMS) and the network Key Performance Indicators.

 

Operations Management

  • Oversees and monitors Congo Basin Country Offices performance vis-à-vis the country/ regional strategic and annual plans, and the achievement of WWF’s conservation goals.
  • Proactively anticipates issues arising across the region that could impact conservation delivery and takes appropriate action to escalate, mitigate and respond swiftly.
  • Works closely with the COO, Africa to ensure operational efficiencies in Country Offices.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Regional Director, Africa.

 

Profile

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum Master’s degree in Business Management, International Relations / Development, Environmental /Conservation Management or other related fields.
  • At least 10 years professional experience in a senior leadership role, 5 years within the Central Africa region.
  • Proven track record in successfully developing, leading, and managing large-scale programmes and/or institutions in the field of conservation, natural resource management, international development, and/or other related fields.

 

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the Central Africa region, cultures/communities and socio-political environment. 
  • Works to the highest level of integrity and confidentiality; with an understanding of risk based approaches and social policies and safeguards.
  • Passion for conservation and the mission of WWF.
  • Demonstrated success in managing multi-disciplinary and multi–cultural teams.
  • Fluency in French and English essential- other languages an advantage.
  • High level negotiation and influencing skills, and the capacity to develop and maintain strong relationships at all levels in the business, not-for-profit, scientific and political communities.
  • Track record of building organizational talent by nurturing performance culture and encouraging empowerment and delegation.
  • Strong diplomatic and communication skills, including an ability to work and communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals (individual donors, business leaders, public figures, WWF staff), within a broad range of cultural environments.
  • Excellent team management and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated fundraising skills, and experience working with donors.
  • Identifies with the values of the WWF organization, Courage, Integrity, Respect & Collaboration.

Working Relationships

 

Internal - Interacts with the WWF Congo Basin Directors, the Congo Basin sub-region Conservation Director, Congo Basin Finance & Operations Manager on a daily basis, the Regional Management Team for Africa, WWF International Secretariat, WWF donors and members of the shareholder group, and other WWF Network staff.

External - Interacts with national governmental and regional institutions, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions, the media, donors, specialists / consultants, and other stakeholders, in collaboration with the Regional Director.
