Background/General Description

The Central Africa Sub-region includes Cameroun, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of Congo and Sao Tome & Principe. The Country office reports to the Regional Director, Western and Central Africa.

The IFC Douala Country Office is looking for a highly motivated Associate investment officer (AIO) to be based in Douala working on the 8 countries under coverage. Reporting to the Country Manager, the Associate Investment Officer will carry out a wide variety of corporate and Project Finance activities including projects generation and supervision. This involves the preparation of presentations and pitch books for IFC’s participation in workshops, conferences and high-level meetings; intensive relationship management with government and business representatives; contribution to strategy formulation, as well as data management and knowledge dissemination.

Specific Responsibilities Will Include

  • Help develop a strong pipeline of good quality investment opportunities through proactive origination/business development and developing and employing sector/country knowledge in the countries under oversight of the Douala office.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, global and regional private businesses, banking and multilateral partners and government officials to further develop the priority sectors and to develop specific investment opportunities in these sectors.
  • Provide regular market intelligence and information to the cluster managers about leads and projects being developed in the countries of the Central Africa Sub-region.
  • Screen proposals and prepare Concept Notes for projects going to Concept Review Meetings discussions with a key focus on overall credit assessment, potential deal structuring, and overall fit with WBG strategy. - Coordinate closely with social, environmental, and advisory services colleagues in order to add value to our clients' businesses, find pragmatic solutions to specific challenges, and achieve sustainable development impact.
  • Assist in the formulation, implementation, monitoring and updating of IFC’s country strategies in the priority sectors, working with IFC’s industries and regional departments and in close coordination with the relevant Global Practices at the World Bank.
  • Prepare pipeline/progress reports tracking the projects and their status, in coordination with the Strategy Office. Coordinate implementation and monitor scorecard deliverables and produce regular reports with inputs from industry colleagues.
  • Prepare relevant strategy papers, briefs, summaries, working papers, reports and promotional materials for internal and external users, in coordination with the Communications office. - Perform other such duties as may be required from time to time to meet emerging, ad-hoc corporate requirements, and/or respond to internal or external requests.
  • Assist the Country Manager in relationship management with all local stakeholders.

Selection Criteria

  • MBA, Master’s degree in finance, accounting, investment banking or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in positions of increasing complexity and responsibility that includes significant experience in finance, investment banking, structured finance or corporate finance, with a proven track record of sourcing, structuring and closing investments.
  • Experience in investment transaction, with proven success in developing client relationships as well as sourcing, negotiating, structuring, and closing quality investments.
  • Knowledge of and experience in financial markets.
  • Knowledge and experience of Central African markets is a plus.
  • Strong business judgment in identifying potential business partners.
  • Strong financial and credit skills; sound business judgment and demonstrated ability to structure a variety of complex financial instruments (debt and equity).
  • Client relationship skills, track record and ability to focus on client needs effectively.
  • Ability to interact directly and independently with the senior management of clients, financial and technical partners as well as senior government officials.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, ability to work successfully in multicultural teams and across boundaries and to build networks across the region, including the ability to mentor and coach others to achieve results.
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and time management skills;
  • Proven ability to work independently and deliver promptly and efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines;
  • Willingness to travel extensively and geographic flexibility;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and French.
